April Gilliland graduated from St. Margaret's School in Victoria, and studied at the University of Victoria where she majored in History and minored in Sociology. In 1999, she was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society, for being in the top 15% of the Faculty of History. Accepted early into law school, and influenced by her father John Gilliland's career in law, she studied at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law, obtaining her LL.B. in 2004.
Summer employment made her adept at understanding client needs and solving problems. Articling with the largest firm on Vancouver Island led to a wide range of experience in both litigation and solicitor's practice. She was called to the British Columbia Bar in Victoria in 2005.
Ms. Gilliland's main areas of professional interest are personal injury and commercial litigation. She is also a member of Velletta & Company’s Natural Resource Law Practice Group. In addition to being a member of the Law Society of British Columbia and the Victoria Bar Association, Ms. Gilliland is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, and many of its local subsections including Women Rainmakers- Vancouver Island, Women Lawyers’ Forum, Young Lawyers, and Civil Litigation. She is the past secretary, vice-chair, and chair of the Women Rainmakers- Vancouver Island. She is the current Co-Chair of the Women Rainmakers- Vancouver Island. She is also a participant in the Women Lawyers’ Forum mentoring program. Ms. Gilliland regularly volunteers for Law Day in Victoria to promote education of the public in the justice system.
Ms. Gilliland is on the Board of Governors of St. Margaret’s School. She sits on the Governance Committee at St. Margaret’s School. She also volunteered during the 2009 provincial election.
Ms. Gilliland has lived in Victoria for 18 years and has strong ties to the community. She has travelled extensively, gaining perspective and renewed appreciation for this part of the world. Her interests include painting, pottery, botany, writing, and exploring this beautiful city.
